Dear Cryptors, CRYPTO IS NOT CBDC — Stop Mixing Them Up
“Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, are decentralised by design. They operate on open, permissionless networks, free from direct government control. CBDCS, by contrast, are digital versions of a nation's fiat currency, issued and fully controlled by its central bank. One offers financial independence; the other extends state oversight.
Conflating the two only plays into regulatory narratives that seek to lump all digital assets under the same restrictive rules.”

“A CBDC works under a system where money moves in a way that can be seen and managed at the national
level. It could make payments faster and cheaper, expand access for the unbanked, and help governments reach people directly. But key questions remain: how private are your transactions, will you fully control your money, what happens without reliable networks or smartphones, will cash still exist, and will people be guided through the transition or pushed into systems they don’t fully understand?” - Marie May

This centralisation is happening very fast, without transparency too. When a NIN is to represent your entire life, what you earn, what you owe, what you access, then the system holding that number has too much power over you.

Arthur: Imagine me having all my money on my phone but I cannot transact. That's the foreseeable danger of having no alternatives other than a digitalized system for transactions.
Maria: The other risk perhaps is the digital trail you leave behind when you transact. This data can be used for surveillance and you have no privacy. Everything you buy can be traced back to your digital wallet where they know what you bought, where you bought it and how much you spent. It also leads to digital profiling.
Arthur: Human beings are largely social. We try to incline to a certain format or know and within those traits we define patterns. The digital agenda tries to paint colour to these patterns. For example if I like to eat a particular food at a particular place, that's my pattern. These agendas are tracing these patterns to create a digital profile. Data doesn't lie. You may deny it but these can be seen because there's proof.

The hacking of Kenya’s State House, Interior, and other government websites shows exactly why the digital ID system is risky.
If people can break into top gov't sites and post extremist messages, what happens when these systems hold our personal details?
This is why, before governments push for digital IDs, they must first make sure their systems are strong and secure and think carefully before creating one central pool of personal data as this is the dream of every hacker. #DigitalID #Kenya

“The purpose of technology is to serve, not to control. By phasing out cash, the spontaneous shopping spree or buying roadside Rolex is shackled, removing an aspect of liberty. This is a call to the governments to look past the shortcuts and find long-term innovations that will not cause humanity to be at the mercy of technology. We are our own threat, not technology.”

Following the UK’s new digital ID law, Digital Agenda reflects on key concerns raised during our October 2024 Town Hall: "Digital IDs-Who's Really in Control?"
Our panel discussed the global push for centralized digital identity systems;
the risks to privacy, autonomy, and inclusion, especially when they are introduced without public consultation, or data protection strategies.
As digital IDs become more common, we should continue to ask; Who is the actual beneficiary in all of this?
